How do I apply for a GST refund as a tourist leaving Australia?

Answered by LandedAU · 2026-07-13

GST Refunds for Tourists Leaving Australia

Australia has a Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) that allows eligible visitors to claim back Goods and Services Tax (GST) on goods purchased before leaving the country.

Who Can Claim

  • You must be a temporary visitor to Australia (not an Australian resident)
  • You must be leaving Australia within 3 months of purchase
  • You must be at least 18 years old

What Goods Qualify

  • New or unused goods you're taking with you
  • Goods purchased from participating retailers
  • Single purchases of A$300 or more (including GST)
  • Items must be in your checked or carry-on baggage at departure

How to Claim

  • Keep your original tax invoices showing the retailer's name, ABN, and GST amount
  • Ask the retailer for a Tax Invoice for the Tourist Refund Scheme
  • Present your goods, invoices, and passport at the TRS counter at the airport before check-in
  • The refund is processed on the spot (usually as cash or credit to your card)

Important Points

  • You must have the goods with you—they cannot be posted or shipped separately
  • Alcohol, fuel, and some other items are excluded
  • The refund is typically 10% of the purchase price (the GST component)
  • TRS counters are located at major Australian airports
