E-scooters are legal to own in NSW, but where and how you can ride them is strictly regulated.

Where You Can Ride

• Approved trial zones only – E-scooters can only be ridden in designated trial areas. Currently, trials operate in specific regions including parts of Sydney, Newcastle, and other areas.
• Private property – You can ride on your own private land with permission.
• Not on public roads or footpaths – Riding on roads, footpaths, or bike lanes outside trial zones is illegal and can result in fines.

Trial Zone Rules

If you're in an approved trial zone, you must:

• Be at least 16 years old
• Wear a helmet
• Follow speed limits (usually 25 km/h)
• Give way to pedestrians
• Not ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs
• Use only registered e-scooters from approved operators (in some zones)

Penalties

Riding illegally outside trial zones can result in fines up to $2,175 and loss of demerit points.
