How the Points System Works

The main skilled migration visas (subclass 189, 190, and 491) assess you across several criteria:

• Age: Maximum 45 points (best points between ages 25-32)
• English language ability: Up to 20 points (tested via IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE)
• Skilled employment: Up to 20 points (work experience in your nominated occupation)
• Educational qualifications: Up to 20 points (Australian or overseas degree)
• State sponsorship: Up to 15 points (for subclass 190 and 491 visas)
• Partner skills: Up to 10 points (if your partner also has relevant skills)

Minimum Points Required

For most skilled visas, you need a minimum of 65 points to be eligible. However, actual selection is competitive—you may need significantly more points to be invited, depending on demand for your occupation and the number of applicants.
